Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Peru: Family Style
Day 1 LIMA, PERU
Arrive in Lima, where you are met and transferred to your hotel. Founded in 1533, this “City of Kings” is a blend of colonial structures, pre-Columbian sites and modern influences.
After a relaxing morning at leisure, explore Peru’s capital, visiting the Plaza Mayor and Cathedral. Spend time exploring the Larco Museum, home to one of the world’s finest collections of regional, pre-Columbian artifacts. Enjoy a host of kid-friendly games and activities from the museum’s family program.
Fly to Cusco, a former capital of the Inca Empire set over 11,000 feet above sea level. Upon arrival, journey to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where an ancient way of life lives on. En route, visit a center where South American camelids (llamas, alpacas and vicuñas) are bred. Learn about the valuable fibers created from their coats as well as the ancient weaving techniques still used today. Relax and acclimatize to the altitude.
Today, trek the Andes as locals have for centuries, exploring ancestral routes along mountain trails escorted by docile llamas and alpacas, on an A&K-exclusive experience. Take in the impressive views of the Sacred Valley as you walk alongside these gentle, endemic species, and visit a village to interact with locals, learn about daily life and join them for a ceremony thanking Mother Earth.
This morning, visit the Children of the Rainbow School, a vital resource for the region's least privileged children. See how the community has partnered with A&K Philanthropy to expand this elementary school’s outreach beyond education, growing it into an oasis of nutrition, medical care and hope. Then, journey deep into the Andes toward Machu Picchu via the glass-topped Vistadome train, passing through spectacular Peruvian countryside along the way. Arrive with plenty of time to begin exploring the breathtaking Incan city. Overlooking the Urubamba River and discovered in a hidden tangle of trees atop the mountain, Machu Picchu forever holds the secret of its passing — its Incan inhabitants left no written records of its purpose or its flawless construction. After a tour of the ruins with your expert guide, there is time to explore on your own.
Rise with the sun to walk through Machu Picchu in the early morning mist before the crowds arrive. After your explorations, journey back to Cusco aboard the Vistadome train, savoring incomparable views of the mountain scenery.
This afternoon, explore Cusco’s iconic architecture, touring the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Santo Domingo Temple, a Dominican church built on the foundations of the Koricancha, the Incas’ principal religious building. Next, take in the awe-inspiring ruins of Sacsayhuaman, a testament to Incan architectural skill. Its walls were built from gigantic stone blocks quarried almost miles away and fitted together with incredible precision, all without a single drop of mortar.
Fly to Lima and transfer to the port. Upon arrival, explore a neighborhood where local history merges with art and culture, one of the most important examples of social transformation in Peru. Then, explore the emblematic heritage zone of the port and its historic streets, from El Real Felipe, La Plaza Grau and La Plaza Matriz to La Plaza Gálvez and the old Ronald building, encountering the city’s art, music, gastronomy, history, graffiti and living culture as you go. Visit the circuit of art galleries and ART.MO 2019, the largest international contemporary art festival in Peru. View the more than 60 murals on the Graffiti Route as well as works by urban artists from around the world at the MuFAU Museum. The area is a delight of bars cevicheras, signature cuisine, Peruvian cuisine and fusion, which you discover for yourself with lunch at a local restaurant in Callao. Close the afternoon with an imposing view of the Callao Bay from the Rooftop Fugaz, a cultural bar noted for its live musical performances.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport and depart.
